As people watch, with equal parts astonishment and anxiety, as AI reads and draws upon thousands of years of accumulated human knowledge within seconds; as it produces extensive syntheses, reasons across bodies of information, identifies answers we have not yet reached ourselves, and begins to create things that did not previously exist, a question far older than artificial intelligence has returned with unexpected urgency:
What is education?What, ultimately, is it meant to cultivate?
A growing chorus has already supplied an answer of sorts: education is becoming obsolete; universities are becoming obsolete; perhaps schools themselves will cease to matter. If knowledge can be summoned from an AI at any moment, then surely the laborious business of learning it must soon become unnecessary.
Whenever I hear this argument, I cannot help wondering whether those who make it have simply been unfortunate enough never to have experienced education in its fullest sense. Anyone who has genuinely been formed by good teaching knows that the value of a teacher, a school, a family or a discipline lies in something far more difficult to quantify than the information transferred from one mind to another. Education, at its best, does not merely make us more intelligent. It does not merely fill us with knowledge, nor is its highest purpose to turn us into the next generation of frontier entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. A worthy education can help form a more mature, lucid and responsible human being: someone capable of sustained discipline and moral judgement; of responsibility towards others and restraint from harm; of humility without self-abasement; of remaining relatively steady in a complicated world; of examining one's own desires and mistakes; and of cultivating an inner order that does not collapse whenever fortune changes.
Not everyone has been fortunate enough to receive such an education. Not every school deserves nostalgia, and not every teacher understands what teaching can be. Yet there are forms of education that cannot be entirely replaced by a search engine, an online lecture or an artificial intelligence. From the outside, we see curricula, fees, qualifications, league tables and degrees. Those who have experienced something deeper often know that its most consequential effects never appear on a transcript. Perhaps the current enthusiasm for declaring education obsolete tells us less about the disappearance of education's value than about how drastically we have already narrowed our conception of what education is.
As industrial society and the modern professions expanded, we became increasingly accustomed to evaluating education by its external returns. If someone does not found a successful company, perhaps their education failed. If they do not enter a prestigious corporation, perhaps it failed. If they do not become an executive or command a sufficiently high salary, perhaps it failed again. Gradually, the question What kind of person should one become? has been displaced by another: What can one acquire? This is a profoundly utilitarian inversion.
In many older traditions of education, the pursuit of knowledge was never understood merely as preparation for employment. Medieval Europe offers a particularly vivid example. The early universities did not emerge as professional training centres in the modern sense, but grew in part from monastic and cathedral schools and from traditions of theology and philosophy. Students were formed through the liberal arts: grammar, rhetoric and logic made up the trivium, while arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy formed the quadrivium. “Music”, in this context, did not primarily mean performance as we now understand it. It was also the study of number, proportion and harmony—the conviction that order in sound could disclose something of a wider order in the cosmos.
Gregorian chant makes this worldview tangible. Its monophonic lines were not principally designed to display the virtuosity or individuality of the singer. They served the liturgy, scripture and the prayer of a community, allowing words to enter memory, bodily practice and daily life through sound. A Gothic cathedral, likewise, was not simply a beautiful building. Its height, its proportions, the movement of light through stained glass, its sculpture and biblical imagery together formed something like a theology one could physically enter, hear and see. Knowledge, art and life had not yet been cleanly separated into independent domains. Learning was not merely the acquisition of a marketable competence; it was also an attempt to understand what kind of universe one inhabited, what was worthy of reverence, and how a human being ought to live within it.
Eastern traditions likewise often connected learning with self-cultivation, moral discernment and the understanding of life itself. Buddhist teaching makes the distinction particularly clear: hearing and intellectual comprehension are never the destination. The Buddha’s teachings can be understood as fingers pointing from different directions towards a moon that must ultimately be seen for oneself. Their purpose is not to make us cling to language and concepts, but to turn our attention back towards the mind and observe directly how craving, anger, attachment and suffering arise and pass away. What matters is not how many “fingers pointing at the moon” one has collected, nor how many scriptures and theories one can recite, but whether one has actually looked where they point. The value of the finger lies in helping us see the moon; the value of knowledge lies, ultimately, in helping the knower see the mind more clearly.
The question, then, is not whether practical knowledge is unworthy. It is whether knowledge has become severed from the question of what the knower becomes. Modern education makes that severance unusually easy. We learn a technology in order to secure employment; study a theory in order to publish; acquire a skill in order to increase productivity; choose a field because it lies closer to capital, salary or measurable output. There is nothing inherently wrong with finance, engineering, computer science or mathematics. The distortion lies in an evaluative system increasingly capable of seeing only what knowledge can be converted into. A remarkably clear cycle emerges:
Acquire information — understand information — apply information — convert it into external results — acquire more information — convert more of it into results.
And so it continues.
Within such a system, becoming a kind of walking human library is already an impressive achievement. Genuine erudition has always been rare. Most people never possess the patience to understand even one field deeply, much less move intelligently between several. Yet if education ends here, AI may simply be the most perfect and extreme conclusion of the path we ourselves have chosen.
It is the largest mobile library humanity has ever built—and far more than a library. It stores information and organises it; summarises and reasons; writes, codes, designs, compares and predicts. It may increasingly discover structures within existing knowledge that no human being has previously articulated. If the ultimate purpose of education is simply to know more, analyse faster and produce more, then of course AI is frightening. Many of the capacities for which we have spent fifteen or twenty years training a human being can increasingly be performed by machines at extraordinary speed.
Perhaps AI has not rendered education meaningless.
Perhaps it has merely revealed how impoverished our definition of education had already become.
I have met people of immense wealth who preside over substantial organisations, as well as people who are exceptionally articulate and clever by almost every conventional measure. They can calculate interests precisely, identify commercial opportunities and manage hundreds or thousands of employees, yet be thrown into fury by a minor slight, become consumed by a small loss, or lose all proportion when another person refuses to satisfy a desire. Conversely, I have met students barely into their teens who already possess a remarkable degree of responsibility, restraint, steadiness and judgement.
This is not a simplistic contrast between rich and poor, private schools and ordinary schools. It points to something more fundamental:
External achievement and inner maturity do not occupy the same axis.
Wealth may increase. Titles may rise. Companies may expand. Knowledge may accumulate. Yet the person carrying the wealth, title and knowledge does not necessarily mature alongside them. It is entirely possible to use knowledge to transform the external world while never allowing knowledge to transform oneself.
More dangerously still, when an immature mind acquires immense wealth, power, recognition or status before it has developed the capacity to carry them, external success may not correct its weaknesses at all. It may simply magnify them. It is rather like placing a fortune in the hands of a three-year-old: the problem is not the money itself, but whether the person who possesses it has judgement, restraint and responsibility proportionate to its power. If someone remains governed by craving, anger, vanity and conceit, greater resources merely give those tendencies more room in which to operate. An impulse that once had the power to injure one person may acquire the means to injure thousands.
Worse still, wealth, applause and habitual obedience from others can gradually become evidence, in the person's own mind, that I must be right. Arrogance deepens; self-examination becomes harder; turning back becomes more difficult. What we conventionally call “success” can therefore become one of the very conditions that carries a person further in the wrong direction. At a certain point, possessing more may not have been a greater blessing than possessing nothing at all. The person who never acquired such power may at least have been spared the opportunity to magnify his or her errors—and may have kept a certain innocence intact.
What, then, have we omitted?
Perhaps the most consequential step of all:
inward transformation.
We are extraordinarily familiar with the horizontal expansion of knowledge and comparatively unfamiliar with the vertical transformation of the human being. Horizontal expansion is easy to recognise. We study finance today, AI tomorrow, art history next year; then add some law, psychology, languages and management. It resembles installing more and more applications on a device. Every application adds a function. Every new field may increase our ability to work, earn, create, understand or solve problems.
There is genuine value in this. A person who possesses ten useful forms of knowledge has opportunities unavailable to someone who possesses only one; someone capable of ten kinds of work has greater freedom of action than someone capable of one. Knowledge can unquestionably become wealth, status, creative power and practical competence.
But installing more applications is not the same thing as transforming the system that carries them.
The metaphor has its limits. For a human being, a “system upgrade” should not mean constructing an ever larger, more important and more fortified self. It can mean becoming increasingly capable of seeing our own reactions before obeying them; becoming less immediately governed by every impulse of desire, fear, comparison or anger.
Knowledge that genuinely changes a person does more than add another fact to the mind. It enters conduct. Repeated conduct shapes habits. Habits influence judgement. Judgement reorganises desire. New understanding then changes how we meet the next moment.
Once, a dismissive remark might have made you angry for an entire day. Later, after genuinely understanding something about ego, comparison and loss—and repeatedly observing these things in your own life—you notice that the same remark now remains in the mind for ten minutes. Once, a failure could make you condemn your entire existence; later, you can contain disappointment without becoming identical to it. Once, another person's success disturbed you; later, you are able to admire it sincerely. Once, difference itself felt threatening; later, you can allow other people to be unlike you. Wealth, praise and status may still affect you, but they no longer command you quite so completely.
What has occurred is no longer simply: I have acquired another skill.
Something has changed in the capacity of the person who carries the knowledge.
A coffee cup cannot contain an ocean. Education, at times, is not a matter of endlessly pouring more into the cup, but of increasing our capacity to contain experience. Yet “greater capacity” does not mean strengthening the walls of the ego. It means being able to hold greater complexity without immediately reacting; to endure loss without being completely shattered by it; to recognise desire without automatically serving it; to recognise anger without immediately converting it into harm.
This is what I mean by capacity.
Knowledge ceases to remain only in the brain. It begins to alter conduct, judgement and the texture of lived experience.
And once such a change takes place, it makes another, deeper round of learning possible. At twenty, you may read the word impermanence and understand it perfectly well as a concept. After experiencing real loss, you may encounter the same word again and discover that it is no longer the same word. The text has not changed. The book has not been upgraded. What has changed is the person reading it—or, more precisely, the person's experience, attachments, habits of understanding and way of seeing.
A different cycle then becomes possible:
Knowledge — reflection — practice — transformation — new understanding — a return to knowledge — further transformation.
This is no longer merely the horizontal accumulation of information. It is a spiral of learning. Knowledge alters the knower, and the altered knower becomes capable of encountering both knowledge and the world differently.
This, to me, is one of the most important educational questions raised by the age of AI. Machines are entering an astonishing recursive process of improvement: more data, stronger reasoning, better outputs, further feedback, further improvement.
But perhaps human beings should remember another kind of recursion.
Understanding changes conduct; conduct forms habits; habits shape the tendencies through which we meet the world; new experience produces new understanding; and so we observe, revise, release and act again.
AI continues to increase its intelligence.
Human beings remain capable of something else:
the transformation of the knower.
From a Buddhist perspective, this transformation can be taken further still. Its ultimate purpose is not to manufacture a more impressive, successful or admirable “self”. A person may become more disciplined, capable and cultivated while remaining profoundly bound by craving, aversion, conceit and attachment. Transformation in the deeper sense therefore includes learning to recognise the grasping that repeatedly produces suffering, and gradually reducing its hold upon us.
Education may help a person become mature. Buddhist practice points beyond secular self-perfection. Its final concern is more radical: how suffering arises, and how suffering can cease.
None of this diminishes knowledge, professional competence, technology, wealth or practical accomplishment. On the contrary, people who attain genuine mastery, create valuable things and translate knowledge into reality deserve respect. The question is simply whether, somewhere in the course of modernity, we mistook an intermediate stage for the destination.
Knowledge is good.
Intelligence is good.
Creating value in the world is good.
But after intelligence, there should be another question:
Once you know all of this, has any of it changed you?
You have read so many books, accumulated so many qualifications, mastered so many skills and understood so many theories. Have they made you more capable of bearing failure? A little less governed by vanity, craving and fear? More respectful of the lives and feelings of others? More capable of recognising your own errors? And as your power has increased, have they made you more careful about where that power ought to be used?
If not, perhaps we have merely constructed a larger library.
And a library is not a human being.
A library may contain every book ever written about courage and never become courageous. It may preserve every paper ever written about compassion and never become compassionate. What distinguishes a human being is not merely that knowledge can enter us.
It is that what enters us can alter how we see, choose and act.
Perhaps the question AI forces us to reconsider is not whether education still matters, but where education was supposed to lead in the first place.
For a long time, we have asked:
What do you know?What can you do?What can you produce?
As intelligence becomes increasingly abundant, perhaps another question deserves to return:
What has all that you know made of you?
After knowing all of this,what kind of person have you become?
And perhaps, one step further:Has it left you with a little less craving, a little less hatred, a little less delusion—and a little greater capacity to see yourself and the world clearly?
Perhaps that is where education, after intelligence, truly begins.
